Same-Day Crowns in Bondi Junction - How CEREC Works and Who It Suits

When a tooth needs a crown, the part most patients dread is not the treatment. It is the idea of two appointments, a temporary crown, and a couple of weeks of being careful on one side of their mouth.

That is exactly the problem same-day crowns are designed to solve.

The first thing I usually explain is this: a crown is a crown, whether it is made in a laboratory over two visits or milled in the practice in a single appointment. What changes with same-day technology is the convenience, not the purpose of the treatment.

At Dentist In The Park in Bondi Junction, we use CEREC technology so that, where it is clinically appropriate, a crown can be designed and fitted in one visit. This article explains how that works, who it suits, and when a traditional crown is still the better choice.

Short answer: what is a same-day crown?

A same-day crown is a dental crown designed and made in the practice during a single appointment using CEREC technology, which scans the tooth, designs the crown on a computer and mills it from a ceramic block on site. For suitable cases it removes the need for a temporary crown and a second visit. Not every tooth or situation is suitable, so the right approach is decided after examining the tooth.

What a crown does, and why teeth need them

A crown is a cap that covers a tooth to restore its strength, shape and function. Healthdirect describes a crown as a cover that is placed over a damaged, decayed or weak tooth to restore it.

Teeth commonly need crowns after large fillings, root canal treatment, cracks, heavy wear, or when a tooth is too broken down for a simple filling to hold. The goal is always the same: protect what remains of the natural tooth and let you chew normally again.

That clinical purpose does not change with same-day technology. A CEREC crown and a laboratory crown are both full crowns. The difference is in how and where the crown is made.

How CEREC same-day crowns work

CEREC is a chairside system that lets a dentist design and produce a ceramic crown in the practice. In simple terms, the process usually involves a few stages in one appointment.

First, the tooth is prepared in the same way as for any crown, removing decay or old filling material and shaping the tooth. Next, a digital scanner captures a detailed 3D image of the tooth instead of a traditional putty impression. The crown is then designed on screen to fit your bite and the neighbouring teeth. Finally, a milling unit carves the crown from a solid ceramic block, and it is fitted and bonded the same day.

For the patient, that often means walking out with the finished crown rather than a temporary one, which is the part most people appreciate.

Same-day crowns versus traditional crowns

Both approaches produce a strong, natural-looking crown. The differences are practical.

A traditional crown usually takes two visits. The tooth is prepared and an impression is taken at the first visit, a temporary crown is placed, and the final crown is made in a dental laboratory and fitted a week or two later.

A same-day crown is designed and milled in the practice, so for suitable cases it is completed in one visit with no temporary crown.

There are still situations where a laboratory crown is the better choice, including some complex cosmetic cases in the front teeth where fine layering of colour and translucency matters, or cases that need particular materials. This is exactly why the decision is made tooth by tooth rather than as a blanket rule.

Who may be suitable for a same-day crown?

A same-day crown may be suitable if:

  • You have a tooth that genuinely needs a crown, confirmed on examination

  • There is enough healthy tooth structure to support a crown

  • Your gums are healthy around the tooth

  • The case suits a milled ceramic crown

  • You value completing treatment in one visit

It may be less suitable, or need a traditional approach, if:

  • The tooth needs additional treatment first, such as root canal treatment or gum treatment

  • It is a demanding front-tooth cosmetic case that benefits from custom laboratory layering

  • A different material or design is clinically preferable

  • There is not enough sound tooth structure and the tooth needs rebuilding or a different plan

These are general guides, not a diagnosis. We confirm suitability after examining the tooth and, where needed, taking an X-ray.

What to expect on the day

A same-day crown appointment is longer than a routine visit because everything happens in one sitting. You can expect tooth preparation, a digital scan, a short wait while the crown is designed and milled, then fitting, adjustment of your bite and bonding.

We will check that the crown feels comfortable when you bite together and that it sits well against the neighbouring teeth before you leave. As with any crown, some short-term sensitivity can occur and usually settles. For nervous patients, the single-visit approach can actually be reassuring, and we offer comfort-focused options we are happy to discuss beforehand.

Looking after a crown

A crown does not get decay itself, but the natural tooth underneath and the gum around it still can. The ADA's oral health information emphasises daily brushing, cleaning between the teeth and regular dental visits to keep teeth and gums healthy, and that applies to crowned teeth just as much as natural ones.

In practice, a crowned tooth lasts longest when you brush twice a day, clean between your teeth daily, avoid using it to bite very hard objects, and keep up with regular check-ups and hygiene visits so we can monitor the margins and the gum.

My approach to crowns

When a tooth needs a crown, I want to answer two questions before talking about same-day technology. First, does this tooth truly need a crown, or would a more conservative option do the job. Second, is this a case where a same-day milled crown will give an excellent result, or one where a laboratory crown is genuinely better.

If a same-day crown is the right call, the convenience is a real bonus. But the decision is always about what protects the tooth best, not about using a particular piece of technology for its own sake.

Request a Crown Assessment in Bondi Junction

If you have a cracked, heavily filled or sensitive tooth, the best next step is an assessment to confirm whether it needs a crown and, if so, whether a same-day CEREC crown is suitable. I can explain your options, whether one visit is realistic for your tooth, and how to keep the result healthy for the long term.

FAQs

What is a CEREC crown?

A CEREC crown is a ceramic crown designed and milled in the practice using a digital scanner and an on-site milling unit, which allows suitable crowns to be completed in a single visit rather than over two appointments.

Are same-day crowns as good as laboratory crowns?

For suitable cases, a same-day ceramic crown is strong and natural-looking and works just like a laboratory crown. Some complex cosmetic cases still benefit from a custom laboratory crown, which is why the choice is made tooth by tooth.

Does getting a crown hurt?

The tooth is numbed during preparation, so the appointment is generally comfortable. Some short-term sensitivity afterwards is common and usually settles. We also offer comfort options for nervous patients.

Can any tooth have a same-day crown?

No. Suitability depends on how much healthy tooth remains, gum health, whether other treatment is needed first, and whether the case suits a milled ceramic crown. Some teeth are better restored a different way.

Will I still need a temporary crown?

For suitable same-day cases, no. The crown is made and fitted in the same appointment, which removes the temporary crown and the waiting period.

How long does a same-day crown appointment take?

Longer than a routine visit, because preparation, scanning, design, milling and fitting happen in one sitting. We will give you a realistic time estimate when we confirm the plan.
