Sleep Apnoea & Snoring
Yes, several lifestyle changes and habits can help manage sleep apnea and alleviate snoring, including:
- Sleeping on your side instead of your back to help keep the airway open
- Avoiding alcohol and sedatives, which relax the throat muscles, contributing to airway blockage
- Quitting smoking, which irritates the airways
- Engaging in regular physical activity
- Using a pillow to elevate the head slightly to ease breathing during slumber
While these methods can provide some relief, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis.
What Is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a disorder in which the normal sleep pattern is disrupted by interruptions in breathing. This happens when the airway becomes blocked, leading to brief pauses in breathing that can last throughout the night.
If left untreated, sleep apnea can result in an elevated risk of a variety of complications, including cognitive issues, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
Sleep Apnea Treatment in Bondi Junction, NSW
If you’re in the Bondi Junction area and would like to learn more about measures that you can to combat sleep apnea, Dr Brendan Quill and the Dentist in the Park team are on hand to schedule a consultation.
Proper restorative sleep is essential to a healthy body. If you snore loudly or choke during sleep, it might indicate a medical condition known as obstructive sleep apnoea, also called OSA. Many times, doctors recommend CPAP therapy, which utilises a machine to use forced air to keep the airway open. Unfortunately, many people find it is difficult to wear the mask during sleep.
Oral Appliance Therapy at our Bondi Junction Office
As an alternative, we offer oral appliance therapy for the treatment of mild to moderate OSA. Oral appliance therapy uses a custom designed mouthguard that gently opens the airway by adjusting the position of the jaw. Many people find this treatment more convenient, especially when they travel.
Of course, not all snoring cases result in an OSA diagnosis. We also make similar appliances to quiet your breathing during sleep. This can reduce or eliminate snoring, allowing you and your partner to share a bed and sleep without interruption. It can also alleviate the sore throats and painful sinuses that come with a snoring habit.
If you recently received an OSA diagnosis or if you snore loudly, contact Dentist in the Park, located in Bondi Junction and arrange a consultation with Dr Brendan Quill. We can help you achieve a better night’s sleep.
